The Wissahickon Girls Cross Country team is off to an impressive start this year. With four total wins against Lower Moreland, Gwynedd Mercy Academy, Plymouth Whitemarsh, and North Penn, the team has truly showcased their hard work and strong performance.
According to senior captain Maddie O’Donnell (‘26), the season has been successful so far. “We won four meets and lost against Upper Dublin in a tie-break because the race goes down to whoever’s sixth runner comes in first if you’re tied,” O’Donnell said. “We also had two invitationals, placing top three in Novice, Varsity, and JV. We definitely have a good group of girls who are always working their hardest.”
The Varsity team is especially looking strong this year, with Berkeley Marcelis (‘29) holding the fastest time in the state. At every invitational, the Varsity and JV teams have gotten second out of the entire meet, with many girls medaling.
When asked about the team dynamic, Adrianna Skerrett (‘26) responded, “Our team is very close, and it’s what makes practices something I look forward to. Overall, it’s a fun and welcoming environment!” In addition, Sonia Highley (‘28) stated, “We all are really getting along. Even if you’re not close friends with someone, you can still have fun with them, and they’re always nice to you if you’re new. We always have fun during the workouts, even if it’s difficult, because we are doing it together!”
The Girls Cross Country team has made great progress in their meets, and their sights are already set on the league championship. Everyone is looking to improve and hit their new season best or PR while encouraging other teammates as they achieve their goals. They are determined to beat Upper Dublin and win the league championship this year, so Coach Vanscoy has the runners working hard with intense training. With the coach’s support, the team is focused on pushing themselves for future meets and preparing for beyond. Best of luck to WHS Girls Cross Country!
