October is beloved for Halloween, pumpkin spice lattes, and hot cider. Although October is a month filled with fun fall festivities, one of the most important events to recognize in October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. October is one of the most well-recognized awareness months each year, with large-scale fundraiser walks to help raise money for research as well as extensive media coverage. The pink ribbon emblem is a common sight during the month. Whether on t-shirts or social media posts, it’s a strong symbol of unity.
In the United States, the American Cancer Society reports that there are currently more than four million women who have either finished treatment for breast cancer or are currently receiving treatment. They also state that approximately one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their life, while one in forty-three women will die from the disease.
As a school community, Wissahickon finds it critical to raise awareness for this important cause. Sports teams at the township intramural level frequently wear pink socks during soccer games. High school teams show out as well, with Girls Soccer wearing pink ribbons in their hair on Senior Night. The most prominent show of support is the football team’s Senior Night, where the theme is a PinkOut. Wissahickon FANS sells shirts for the game, with some of the proceeds going towards breast cancer charities.
In addition to this, the Student Council hosts a spirit day every year to honor those fighting breast cancer. Student Council’s secretary Simi Mehendirata (’27) says, “Student council believes that it is important to host a PinkOut Spirit Day in October to raise awareness and show support for those affected by breast cancer.” Every student is encouraged to wear pink as a sign of support. She adds, “By coming together as a school, we’re not only honoring survivors, but promoting unity and contributing to a meaningful cause.”
Each year, the Wissahickon Community unites and shows out to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month because in October, we wear pink.
