As the colder season approaches, so do Wissahickon’s indoor sports! Indoor color guard is a performance-based sport combining dance and spinning equipment to create a themed performance. Some of Wissahickon’s show themes from the past include “Slumber Party” (2024 Bronze Medalist), “404 error,” and “Bon Voyage.” No experience is required to join as the coaches and veterans on the team help to create a foundation for success. Color guard members build athletic ability and express creativity through their sport while being in a strong community led by the color guard captain Shannon Bips (‘27).
The indoor color guard season goes from early December to mid-April with practices three times a week. These practices run from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., meaning that members can attend other after-school activities without being late to practice. During practices, members learn how to handle their equipment (such as flags, rifles, and sabres) as well as choreography that incorporates dance. Throughout the season, the team goes to competitions where they interact with color guards from other schools and perform their show. These competitions allow members to bond and highlight all the awesome skills they have learned.
Being a part of the color guard means finding a community, building confidence, expressing creativity, and having fun.
