Every summer, Wissahickon carries on their tradition of offering summer trips to various countries around the world to their students. This past summer, students had the opportunity to travel to Greece. The eight-day itinerary included several attractions, from coastal towns to the mountains to bustling cities. Each day was filled with sightseeing, travelling, and exploring foreign towns.
Many of the travelling students imagined Greece as a country filled with ancient ruins, beautiful beaches, and cobblestone streets. However, once they got there, they were surprised to find much more. In particular, the towering mountains in Delphi and the contemporary city of Athens caught their eyes. Aanvi Mudalgikar (‘28), one of the students on the trip, was asked about her experience and stated, “I really didn’t expect Athens to be like the cities at home. I thought the buildings would be small and most of the streets would be cobblestone, but they weren’t.”
However, some locations students travelled to were what they envisioned them to be. Imagine a town on the waterfront with enormous yachts in the water and tiny cobblestone streets lined with shops and restaurants. This would be the town of Nafplio, where students stopped at for a lunch break and time to roam around. Mudalgikar explained that this was one of the prettiest stops on their trip, “It was like straight out of a postcard. There were many cute shops where I found souvenirs.”
While the trip was a fun getaway, it also introduced Wissahickon students to a new culture. Sky Rostolsky (‘28) was another traveler this summer and reflected, “It was fun to spend time with friends, but also to be immersed in the culture! It was an experience seeing the difference between American culture and one where hugging strangers doesn’t violate personal space.”
The trip to Greece allowed students to enjoy spending time with peers while also giving them the opportunity to step out of their comfort zones and experience a new culture firsthand. From unexpected environments to picture-perfect coastal towns, these Wissahickon travelers embarked on a vacation they will always remember.
