Ah, summertime: an opportunity to kick back by the pool, go out for ice cream, enjoy trips with friends, or…plan next year’s yearbook. That’s right. While many Wissahickon students spent their summers along the East Coast, the Wissahickon Yearbook Staff took a trip to the West Coast to attend The Jostens National Yearbook Workshop at the University of San Diego.
So, what does one do at a yearbook workshop? Students were tasked with creating a concept poster showcasing different elements of what students will see in this year’s yearbook. These elements included the cover, endsheets, title page, opening spread, dividers, and a sample spread.
Additionally, this yearbook workshop taught students valuable lessons to help make this yearbook the best one yet. Junior Madi Platt (‘27) explained, “This workshop taught me many ways to be a leader and promote healthy teamwork which will be beneficial for this year’s staff.” Platt is in charge of morale for this year’s yearbook staff and returned home with “lots of ideas.”
Outside of simply planning the book for next year, the Jostens National Yearbook Workshop gave Wissahickon students a chance to speak with other budding yearbook editors from states like Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico. Jostens provided ample opportunities to chat with other schools at social events such as scavenger hunts, a hypnotist show, and Family Feud.
Beyond the workshop, the Wissahickon Yearbook Staff visited attractions across Southern California. Senior Grace O’Donnell (‘26) remarked, “I loved the experience in San Diego. Not only was the area beautiful, but we got to see other parts of California, such as the beach and Disneyland.”
Overall, attending the Jostens National Yearbook workshop gave the Wissahickon yearbook staff an excellent head start on this year’s book. Stay tuned and follow @wissyearbook on Instagram for all of the latest updates!
